Anesthesia is a medication, given before surgery, that helps lessen pain or discomfort during a procedure. It is a controlled temporary loss of sensation administered intravenously (IV) or inhaled. A patient under general anesthesia will be unable to feel the pain which is known as a medically induced coma.
